What Is Medicare

Medicare is a federal health insurance program in the United States that provides coverage for eligible individuals:

• 65yo US citizen

• Certain people under 65 who have disabilities

• People with End-Stage Renal Disease

• People with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

Medicare is broken into four parts, each covering specific aspects of healthcare:

Part A (Hospital Insurance)

• Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care.

• Generally, there is no monthly premium for Part A if the individual or their spouse paid Medicare taxes during their working years.

Part B (Medical Insurance)

• Covers outpatient care, doctor visits, preventive services, and some home health care.

• Requires a monthly premium, based on income.

Part C (Medicare Advantage)

• Also known as Medicare Advantage Plans, these are private insurance plans that combine coverage from Medicare Parts A and B.

• Often includes additional benefits like vision, dental, and prescription drug coverage.

• Offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare.

Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage)

• Provides prescription drug coverage through private insurance plans approved by Medicare.

• Helps cover the cost of prescription medications.

Medigap (Medicare Supplement Insurance)

• Private insurance plans that individuals can purchase to supplement original Medicare coverage (Parts A and B).

• Helps cover costs such as copayments, deductibles, and coinsurance.

• Offers additional financial security.

Medicare Supplement

Medicare Supplement

(Medigap) is a type of private health insurance designed to supplement Original Medicare (Part A and Part B). Private insurance companies offer the plans and come in several types labeled A through N. Each type covers a different amount of the costs that Medicare doesn’t pay, so you can pick the one that’s best for you.

Coverage of Gaps in Medicare

Medigap policies are designed to fill in the "gaps" in coverage left by Original Medicare, such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.

Standardized Plans

Medigap plans are standardized by the federal government, meaning each plan with the same letter designation (e.g., Plan A, Plan B) offers the same basic benefits, regardless of the insurance company providing it.

Compatibility with Original Medicare

Medigap works alongside Original Medicare, and you must have both Part A and Part B to enroll in a Medigap plan.

Premiums

Individuals pay a monthly premium to the private insurance company for their Medigap coverage.

No Prescription Drug Coverage

Medigap plans do not include coverage for prescription drugs. Beneficiaries need to enroll in a separate Medicare Part D plan for prescription drug coverage.
